Early Self Portraits

These images mark the beginning of Cari Faye Antonovich’s journey into self-portraiture. Photographed during her time at Casper College on a Canon 35mm film camera, they capture the curiosity and experimentation that would come to define her practice. She recalls spending hours in the darkroom, playfully trying to make it appear as though she was holding herself in her own hand. The first image in the series was taken in her bedroom on Monument Road—her very first self-portrait. Each photograph was created either in that bedroom or in the college studio. Cari is proud of these early works for what they represent: the moment photography became both play and discovery.
